Substance Addiction

Substances give us a false sense of security.

Substance addiction develops from overuse of substances such as alcohol, cocaine, THC, or opioids. It hijacks the brain’s reward system, leading to a need for increased use to feel good. A subconscious attempt to meet some underlying emotional or psychological need, people find themselves using substances to escape, experience excitement, “numb out,” or to avoid problems, stress, or emotional discomfort.

Signs of Substance Overuse, Abuse or Addiction

  • A need to use more or increase frequency of use to achieve the same “high”

  • Using substances to escape your problems or soothe your emotions

  • Increase in irritability, depression, anxiety, or lethargy

  • Neglecting work, sleep, fitness, or relationships due to increase use of substances

Treatment

To break the cycle of addiction, the brain must be re-wired to derive pleasure from fulfilling activities and social interactions rather than through an instant hit of dopamine. In therapy, we will assess your needs and construct a personalized program for detoxing the body and brain, exploring ways to cope with tough emotions effectively, and regaining connection with self and others. We will also address any co-occurring disorders and work through any underlying issues that you may be numbing, medicating, avoiding, or acting out through the use of substances, so you can return to a balanced life.
